Vi Set to Launch 5G Services in Delhi and Bengaluru This April: A New Era of Connectivity!

Vodafone Idea is gearing up for a major expansion of its 5G network, following the successful launch of commercial services in Mumbai. The telecom giant plans to roll out its next-generation offerings in Delhi, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, and Patna starting this April. This strategic move comes as part of the company’s broader initiative to enhance digital transformation and improve customer experiences.

Strategic Growth Plans

In its recent investor update, Vodafone Idea outlined a comprehensive strategy aimed at fostering growth through digital advancements and partnerships with enterprises. This announcement comes on the heels of a significant relief measure from the government, which approved the conversion of a portion of the company’s ₹36,950 crore spectrum debt into equity. This shift is expected to ease cash flow challenges for the telecom provider.

  • Post-conversion, the government will own 48.99% of Vodafone Idea.
  • The Vodafone Group UK will hold 16.07%, while the Aditya Birla Group’s stake will be around 9.5%.

Expanding Network Reach

Vodafone Idea has set its sights on enhancing its competitiveness across 17 circles in India. The company aims to improve its 4G coverage as well as expedite its 5G rollout. As part of these efforts, the telco anticipates that its 4G population coverage will rise to 90% by March 2026, a significant increase from 82% at the end of March 2025 and 74% in March 2020.

To support these ambitious plans, Vodafone Idea has allocated a capital expenditure (capex) budget of ₹10,000 crore for FY25, with ₹5,000 crore already deployed in the first three quarters of the fiscal year.

Focus on Revenue Growth

In its update, Vodafone Idea acknowledged that the late adoption of 5G technology is allowing the company to embrace advanced technology and improve cost efficiency. The focus on upgrading its network also presents opportunities to enhance its average revenue per user (ARPU). The company noted that a significant portion of its customer base could be upgraded to 4G services.

  • Out of 199.8 million subscribers, 73.8 million are currently non-data users.
  • Approximately 37% of these subscribers are potential candidates for an upgrade to 4G.

Vodafone Idea’s leadership, including CEO Akshaya Moondra, emphasizes the necessity for a revision in tariff structures. Moondra has argued that a uniform pricing model, regardless of data consumption, is not sustainable. Instead, he advocates for a pricing strategy that charges heavier data users more, which could optimize returns on invested capital.

Future Prospects for ARPU

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reported a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5% for blended ARPU between September 2016 and September 2024. In contrast, average monthly wireless data consumption per subscriber has surged at a staggering CAGR of 75.9%, rising from 0.2 GB to 21 GB during the same timeframe.

Vodafone Idea asserts that this increase in data consumption, coupled with the established willingness of consumers to pay, creates substantial opportunities for ARPU growth. The company firmly believes that further price adjustments are essential to generate reasonable returns and support ongoing investments.

Diverse Growth Opportunities

Beyond boosting its consumer mobility business, Vodafone Idea is also targeting expansion in the enterprise sector. The company plans to enhance its offerings in areas such as IoT solutions, cloud services, and business security solutions, positioning itself for sustained growth in a competitive market.
