The Indian stock market is observing a pause today, Thursday, May 1, 2025, in honor of Maharashtra Day, a significant state holiday marking the establishment of Maharashtra. This annual celebration results in the closure of all major stock exchanges located in Mumbai, including the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), and the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). Investors on Dalal Street should take note that regular trading will resume tomorrow, Friday, May 2, 2025.

Understanding Maharashtra Day

Maharashtra Day, also referred to as Maharashtra Divas, commemorates the formation of the state in 1960. On this day, trading in various segments of the stock market will be halted, including:

  • Equity Segment
  • Equity Derivatives Segment
  • SLB Segment
  • Currency Derivatives Segment
  • NDS-RST
  • Tri-Party Repo segments

Additionally, the Commodity Derivatives Segment and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) will also be inactive during the morning trading session, which runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, these segments will reopen in the evening at 5:00 PM.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays

Interestingly, Maharashtra Day is the sole stock market holiday in May 2025, ensuring that traders have uninterrupted access for the rest of the month. The stock market will not have any holidays in June or July. Looking ahead, the next holiday following Maharashtra Day will be Independence Day on August 15, 2025. Another holiday later in August is scheduled for Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27, 2025.
