Market Watch: How Global Trends, US Tariffs, and Inflation Data Are Shaping Stock Movements

As the stock market gears up for a holiday-shortened trading week, analysts predict significant influences from global dynamics, key economic data, and developments surrounding U.S. tariffs. Investors are keenly observing foreign investment trends, geopolitical tensions, and their subsequent effects on the U.S. dollar and crude oil prices.

Global Trends Impacting the Market

Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking Ltd, emphasized the absence of major domestic events this week. He stated, “Market participants will be keenly focused on global updates, particularly regarding tariff negotiations and key macroeconomic indicators. Notably, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have reduced their selling activity in cash markets; any changes in their behavior will serve as an essential market signal.”

Key Economic Data to Watch

Investors are particularly attentive to upcoming macroeconomic reports, including the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation data. The CPI figures for both the U.S. and India are scheduled for release on March 12. It’s important to note that the equity markets will be closed on Friday in observance of Holi.

Market Performance Insights

Last week, the BSE Sensex surged by 1,134.48 points, marking a 1.55% increase, while the NSE Nifty climbed by 427.8 points, which is a 1.93% rise. This upward momentum can be attributed to optimistic reports regarding a delay in U.S. tariffs, coupled with ongoing negotiations that have contributed to a sense of stability in financial markets. Furthermore, a weaker dollar alongside declining crude oil prices has significantly boosted investor confidence.

Sector Performance Highlights

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, pointed out that domestic markets finished positively for the first time in several weeks, supported by a Q3 FY25 GDP recovery and improved consumer spending. Notably, sectors such as metals, capital goods, and energy saw strong performance, fueled by optimism surrounding China’s stimulus initiatives and falling crude oil prices.

Looking Ahead

Nair also mentioned that investors should keep an eye on U.S. payroll data and inflation statistics, as these will provide critical insights into the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decisions. Although broader market valuations might pose a challenge to short-term recovery, large-cap stocks continue to be appealing, particularly in light of easing tariff tensions and an optimistic earnings outlook.

By staying informed about these dynamics, investors can better navigate the complexities of the stock market this week.
