JSW Energy Launches Rs 16,000 Crore Thermal Power Plant Construction in Bengal

JSW Energy has officially kicked off the construction of its ambitious 1,600 MW ultra supercritical thermal power plant in Salboni, located in West Bengal. This monumental project, valued at ₹16,000 crore, stands as the company’s largest greenfield initiative to date, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy landscape.

Significant Power Purchase Agreement Secured

The new plant is backed by a robust 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL). Utilizing domestic coal allocated to the state under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, this facility aims to enhance the local energy supply while adhering to sustainable practices.

Key Impacts on Regional Development

This project is not just about generating electricity; it is a vital component of JSW Energy’s strategy to expand its footprint in East India. The Salboni power plant is set to strengthen the region’s industrial framework and create over 2,000 job opportunities, both directly and indirectly, according to the company’s projections.

In addition to the thermal plant, JSW Energy has also made headlines by acquiring the KSK Mahanadi Power Company, which operates a thermal power facility, earlier this year.

Chairman’s Vision for Growth

Sajjan Jindal, the chairman of JSW Group, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “The upcoming 1,600 MW ultra supercritical thermal power plant is not only our largest greenfield facility but also the biggest thermal project initiated by a private entity in West Bengal.” He believes that this initiative will act as a catalyst for job creation and regional development.

Industrial Park Enhancements

Alongside the power plant, JSW is developing a JSW Industrial Park in Salboni, covering 2,000 acres. This park will feature modern plug-and-play infrastructure designed in line with contemporary urban planning principles. Jindal remarked, “The industrial park will be a game changer for industrial and economic growth in the state and the broader eastern region.”

Ambitious Future Goals

JSW Energy is on track to significantly advance its goal of achieving 20 GW of power generation capacity before the 2030 deadline. Currently, the company has locked in projects that will provide over 30 GW of capacity, with an expectation of reaching 14 GW of installed capacity by June 2025.

Moreover, JSW Energy is making strides in the energy storage sector, with projects totaling 16.3 GWh, including one of India’s largest pumped hydro storage initiatives at 12 GWh. The company aims to achieve 40 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2030, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

This ambitious project and its accompanying developments are poised to transform the energy landscape in West Bengal, demonstrating JSW Energy’s dedication to fostering economic growth and sustainability in India.
