Is the Indian Stock Market Closed Today for Holi 2025? Find Out About Stock Market Holidays!

India is in a festive mood today, March 14, 2025, as it celebrates the vibrant festival of Holi. This colorful occasion raises an important question for traders: Will the Indian stock market be operational today? To find out, investors should refer to the stock market holiday calendar for 2025.

Is the Indian Stock Market Open on Holi?

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have officially declared today a holiday in observance of Holi. Consequently, all trading activities on these exchanges will be paused for the day.

  • Trading segments affected include:
    • Equity Segment
    • Equity Derivative Segment
    • SLB Segment
    • Currency Derivatives
    • NDS-RST
    • Tri Party Repo

As per the BSE’s stock market holiday schedule for 2025, investors should note that trading will not take place today.

Partial Trading Sessions for Commodity Markets

Interestingly, the Commodity Derivatives Segment and Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) will observe a split schedule. While these segments will be closed for morning trading from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, they will reopen for evening trading from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will follow a similar pattern, closing in the morning and resuming at 5 PM.

Upcoming Stock Market Holidays in March 2025

March 2025 features two significant stock market holidays:

  • Holi: March 14, 2025
  • Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramzan Id): March 31, 2025

These holidays mean that trading on both the BSE and NSE will halt on March 14 and again on March 31, 2025.

Market Performance Recap Before the Holiday

On the trading day before Holi, March 13, 2025, the Indian stock market experienced a downturn. The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, both closed lower, reflecting concerns over weak global trends.

  • Market Highlights:
    • Sensex fell by 200.85 points (or 0.27%), ending at 73,828.91—marking its fifth straight day in the red.
    • Nifty 50 declined by 73.30 points (or 0.33%), settling at 22,397.20.
    • Broader markets also struggled, with the Nifty Midcap 100 dropping 0.75% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 plunging 0.98%. The Bank Nifty index remained relatively stable, closing above 48,000.
