Coal India Limited (CIL) is embarking on an ambitious journey to deliver 4,500 MW of carbon-free energy to AM Green’s forthcoming green ammonia facilities. This initiative will primarily harness the power of both solar and wind energy, showcasing CIL’s commitment to sustainable practices across the nation.
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signed
Recently, a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) was inked between CIL and AM Green, paving the way for a long-term strategy focused on sourcing and supplying renewable energy. This collaboration marks a significant step towards a greener future.
Capacity Breakdown for Renewable Energy
- Solar Energy: Expected to contribute between 2,500 MW and 3,000 MW
- Wind Energy: Projected to deliver 1,500 MW to 2,000 MW
- Investment: The total investment for this ambitious project is estimated at around ₹25,000 crore
CIL plans to identify potential sites for wind projects primarily in the southern states, while solar plants will be developed in states like Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Ensuring a Steady Energy Supply
To guarantee a consistent supply of green energy, AM Green will leverage pumped hydro storage technology alongside the renewable resources provided by CIL. This integration is essential for maintaining a reliable energy flow to their facilities.
Commitment to a Greener Future
PM Prasad, the chairman of CIL, emphasized that while coal continues to play a vital role in meeting India’s immediate energy demands, the company is dedicated to fostering a more sustainable future. "Our goal is to evolve into the country’s integrated energy provider," he stated, underscoring the importance of transitioning towards renewable energy sources.
AM Green’s Vision for Green Hydrogen
AM Green, backed by the founders of Greenko, has set an ambitious target to produce 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia by 2030. This production level equates to approximately 1 MTPA of green hydrogen, contributing significantly to India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims for substantial advancements in green hydrogen production.
A Landmark Partnership
Anil Chalamalasetty, founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "We are thrilled to partner with CIL on one of the largest carbon-free renewable energy supply contracts globally. Our aim is to emerge as a highly cost-competitive producer of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other green molecules."
The signing ceremony featured key representatives from both organizations, including Sudarsan Bora from CIL and Shatanshu Agrawal from AM Green, along with CIL’s leadership team.
This partnership not only signifies a major leap towards sustainable energy solutions but also positions both companies at the forefront of the green energy revolution in India.
