BIS Conducts Major Raids on Amazon, Flipkart, and Other E-Tailers' Warehouses

In a decisive move to uphold consumer safety standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has launched extensive search operations across prominent e-commerce platforms, including Amazon and Flipkart. These raids, which took place in major cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Lucknow, aimed to uncover and seize products that lack the necessary BIS certification. The findings are a wake-up call for both consumers and retailers about the importance of compliance with safety regulations.

E-Commerce Platforms Under Scrutiny

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution revealed that numerous non-certified products were identified during BIS’s surveillance efforts. Not only were platforms like Amazon and Flipkart implicated, but others such as Meesho, Myntra, and BigBasket were also found selling uncertified items, despite BIS certification being mandatory for these goods.

Significant Seizures Made

During a raid at an Amazon facility in Lucknow, BIS confiscated a total of 215 toys and 24 hand blenders, all of which were devoid of the essential BIS certification. This operation follows a similar raid in February 2025, where an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram saw the seizure of several products, including:

58 aluminium foils
34 metallic water bottles
25 toys
20 hand blenders
7 PVC cables
2 food mixers
1 speaker

Flipkart Warehouse Findings

A separate investigation at a Flipkart warehouse, managed by Instakart Services Pvt Ltd in Gurugram, resulted in the seizure of 534 stainless steel bottles (vacuum insulated), 134 toys, and 41 speakers, all lacking the mandatory certification.

Uncovering the Source

BIS’s thorough investigations traced the origin of these non-certified products back to Techvision International Pvt Ltd. Following this lead, BIS executed raids at two of Techvision’s facilities in Delhi, uncovering a shocking inventory that included:

7,000 electric water heaters
4,000 electric food mixers
95 electric room heaters
40 gas stoves

Brands implicated in these findings include Digismart, Activa, Inalsa, Cello Swift, and Butterfly.

Legal Actions and Penalties

As a consequence of these seizures, BIS has initiated legal proceedings against Techvision International, with two court cases already filed and more on the horizon. The penalties for these violations are severe, with fines starting at two lakh rupees and potentially escalating to ten times the value of the goods sold. Furthermore, offenders could face imprisonment for up to two years under the BIS Act, depending on the severity of their actions.
