Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reassured businesses on Tuesday that India’s priorities will remain at the forefront when forming trade agreements. Speaking at an event, Goyal emphasized that "India First" is not just a slogan but a commitment that guides all negotiations. While he refrained from sharing specific details about ongoing discussions with the United States, he expressed optimism about the direction these talks are taking.
Positive Developments in Trade Talks
Goyal highlighted that India’s trade discussions with multiple countries are progressing smoothly. He stated, “We are addressing a broad spectrum of topics and products, ensuring that the interests of Indian businesses are paramount.” This sentiment underscores India’s strategic vision for international trade as it aims to enhance its economic standing.
Future Economic Vision
The anticipated bilateral trade agreement with the US is viewed as a crucial step toward transforming India’s economy, with aspirations to reach developed nation status by 2047, coinciding with the centennial celebration of its independence. Goyal shared his vision at the Dubai India Business Forum, where he also announced plans to establish an Indian Institute of Management and an Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in the UAE. This initiative marks a significant milestone in strengthening India-UAE relations.
Strengthening Ties with the Middle East
Goyal expressed a desire for Dubai to become a key hub for India’s connections in the Middle East, noting that around 2 million Indians currently live in the city. The event also witnessed several announcements from Dubai-based organizations, including the initiation of construction for the Bharat Mart in Al Jabeli, slated for completion by the end of next year.
Facilitating Trade with Africa
In addition, the launch of the Bharat-Africa Setu aims to facilitate Indian exporters’ access to 53 cities across Africa, supported by DP World. Furthermore, a collaboration between DP World and RITES will focus on developing global projects, while another partnership with Cochin Shipyard will enhance ship repair and building capabilities along India’s coastline.
Minister’s Reflections on Political Dynamics
During the discussions, Goyal addressed recent controversies surrounding his comments on Indian startups, clarifying that his intentions were misrepresented. He criticized the Congress party for distorting his remarks, asserting that his goal was to motivate young entrepreneurs to pursue ambitious goals. He also noted a perceived decline in the Congress party under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, whom he described as a "non-serious politician."
Commitment to Community Justice
In other significant news, Goyal mentioned that proposed amendments to the Waqf Act are expected to promote fair management of Waqf properties for charitable and religious purposes, ultimately benefiting the Muslim community.
With these developments, India is poised to enhance its global economic footprint while ensuring that national interests remain a priority in all trade negotiations.
