Rajeev Chandrasekhar Reveals: Lessons from BPL Days on Innovation’s Struggles Amidst Poor Policy

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, known as RC, has embarked on a new chapter in his political career as he steps into the role of BJP state president in Kerala. This move comes nearly two decades after his initial foray into politics, which was sparked by a tumultuous experience in the telecommunications industry. In a candid conversation back in 2006, RC shared how the disruptive entry of Reliance Infocomm into the cellular market devastated his successful venture, BPL Communications. This pivotal moment ignited his passion for influencing public policy.

A Journey from Telecom to Politics

Born on May 31, 1964, in Ahmedabad, Rajeev’s roots are deeply embedded in a disciplined environment, being the son of an Air Force officer. He pursued his education in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology and later obtained a master’s degree in computer science from the Illinois Institute of Technology. His early career at Intel paved the way for his return to India, where he joined BPL in 1991 and launched its mobile division just as the telecom sector began to open up.

RC’s time at BPL was not without challenges. He went through a high-profile dispute with his father-in-law, TPG Nambiar, which culminated in an out-of-court settlement concerning BPL Communications. In 2005, he sold a significant stake in the company to Essar Group for approximately $1.1 billion and subsequently founded Jupiter Capital, investing an initial $100 million.

Political Engagement and Advocacy

His political journey began when he became an independent Rajya Sabha MP backed by the BJP. Over his 18-year tenure in the Upper House, RC emerged as a staunch advocate for transparency and technological advancement. He was notably vocal during the 2G spectrum scam, highlighting the corrupt practices that led to significant financial losses for the government. In the landmark Shreya Singhal case, he played a crucial role in the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that protected online free speech, reflecting his commitment to safeguarding democratic values in the digital age.

From 2021 to 2024, RC served as the Minister of State for Electronics and IT in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second administration. His tenure emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to foster economic growth, showcasing his belief that effective governance must integrate technological innovation.

New Challenges in Kerala

Now, as the new BJP chief in Kerala, RC faces a formidable challenge in a state traditionally dominated by the Left and Congress parties. His appointment signifies a strategic attempt by the BJP to penetrate this tough political landscape. Upon assuming office, he made a bold promise: “I’ll return only after bringing the NDA to power,” echoing the determination he exhibited at the start of his political career.

RC’s extensive background in technology and business positions him uniquely to tackle the pressing issues facing Kerala, such as debt, brain drain, and stagnant investments—topics he addressed in his inaugural speech. Despite losing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to Shashi Tharoor by a margin of 16,077 votes, his focus remains on economic development rather than divisive politics.

The Path Ahead

The question remains: can Rajeev Chandrasekhar successfully lead the BJP in Kerala? The state’s political environment is known for its challenges, and some critics question his grassroots experience. Nonetheless, RC’s journey from a telecom executive affected by policy failures to a leader intent on shaping those very policies illustrates a remarkable evolution. At 60 years old, he is now poised to make a significant impact in a landscape that demands innovation and strategic thinking.

Navigating this political terrain will require not just acumen but a genuine connection with the people of Kerala, making this a pivotal moment for both him and the BJP.
