Thailand Accelerates $29 Billion Transport Link with New Draft Law

In a bold move to enhance Thailand’s connectivity and economic growth, the government is set to launch a significant initiative aimed at developing the Southern Economic Corridor. As outlined in a recent statement from the Transport Ministry, this ambitious plan will establish a commission tasked with accelerating development across the provinces of Chumphon, Ranong, Suratthani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The Landbridge Project: A Game Changer for Thailand

Proposed by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and his Pheu Thai party, the Landbridge project is projected to cost around 1 trillion baht (approximately $29 billion). This transformative project will construct a 100-kilometer (62-mile) highway and rail link, connecting two planned seaports on opposite sides of Thailand’s southern peninsula. By providing an alternative route to the heavily trafficked Malacca Strait, this initiative aims to significantly reduce shipping times between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Commission Responsibilities and Goals

The newly formed commission, which will be led by the prime minister, is tasked with overseeing various aspects of the project. Its responsibilities will include:

  • Developing logistics and infrastructure
  • Upgrading information technology systems
  • Establishing essential facilities in the targeted provinces
  • Securing funding for the project

This draft bill is currently undergoing public hearings and will soon be presented to the Cabinet and parliament for further consideration.

Engaging Global Investors

Former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, also a member of the Pheu Thai party, has actively promoted the Landbridge project to international investors during his trips to the United States and China. Thailand envisions the project’s completion by 2030, which includes provisions allowing foreign investors to hold over 50% ownership in joint ventures with local firms tasked with constructing the necessary infrastructure.

Economic Impact and Cost Estimates

The development of deep-sea ports in Ranong and Chumphon may require an investment of approximately 630 billion baht, according to estimates from the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning. This venture not only aims to enhance Thailand’s logistical capabilities but also to bolster its economic landscape, attracting foreign investment and fostering regional trade.

As Thailand embarks on this transformative journey, the Landbridge project stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to advancing its infrastructure and economic prospects, ensuring a brighter future for its southern provinces.
