Nifty 50 Surges 3% in March After 5 Months of Declines: Will the Bullish Momentum Continue?

The Indian stock market is showing signs of recovery after enduring five months of consistent losses, with the Nifty 50 index experiencing a notable uptick in March. This rebound comes amidst global uncertainty, particularly concerning trade tensions and recession fears in the United States. On March 18, the Nifty 50 surged by over 1%, reaching 22,781 during intraday trading, marking a 3% increase for the month so far.

Factors Driving Nifty 50’s Recovery

Several factors are contributing to the positive momentum in the Indian stock market:

  • Valuation Comfort: Investors find current valuations attractive.
  • Economic Growth Outlook: A more optimistic forecast for India’s economy is emerging.
  • Falling Inflation: A significant reduction in inflation rates is boosting market sentiment.
  • Rate Cut Expectations: Anticipation of further interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of India adds to market confidence.

Despite this recovery, the Nifty 50 remains 13% lower than its peak of 26,277, which was reached on September 27, 2022. Concerns linger due to ongoing trade disputes initiated by US President Donald Trump, rising tensions in the Middle East, and persistent foreign capital outflows, prompting the question: Can this upward trend be maintained?

Is Nifty 50 Positioned for Sustained Growth?

While the long-term perspective for the Indian stock market appears promising, experts caution that it may be premature to declare the end of the downturn. A trend reversal may depend on the results of the upcoming Q4FY25 earnings and supportive macroeconomic data indicating steady economic progress in India.

Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities, emphasizes that ongoing tariff disputes introduce significant uncertainty into the macroeconomic environment. "These tariff issues are likely to create volatility in the market," he noted, highlighting the global trade war’s impact on stock markets.

Vinit Bolinjkar, head of research at Ventura, acknowledges the recent recovery of the Nifty after five months of decline but warns that this rebound might be fleeting. He points out that geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, and the weakening rupee contribute to a fragile market sentiment. Furthermore, he cautions that escalating tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe could disrupt commodity prices, leading to potential downgrades in corporate earnings forecasts.

Expert Insights on Market Volatility

Sneha Poddar, VP of research and wealth management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, remains optimistic about India’s economic growth. She notes, "While there may be risks to FY26E earnings, we expect growth to stay in double digits." Poddar highlights that accommodating fiscal and monetary policies will likely enhance demand and growth in the coming quarters.

Her analysis of the Nifty 50’s correction phases over the past decade suggests that the market might be nearing the end of its correction. However, she warns that a slowdown in major global economies due to the ongoing trade war could negatively influence investor sentiment, adding to market volatility.

Investment Strategies for Indian Investors

In light of the current uncertainties and anticipated market fluctuations, experts recommend that investors consider increasing their equity exposure.

  • Long-Term Outlook: The long-term prospects for the Indian stock market remain bright.
  • Investment Timing: Investors are encouraged to buy at current levels and increase positions during market dips.
  • Caution Advised: It’s wise to avoid stocks heavily reliant on exports and focus on sectors driven by domestic consumption.

Chouhan also advises caution regarding mid- and small-cap stocks until market conditions stabilize.
