Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is gearing up to divest its 4.9% stake in Asian Paints, according to a report by The Economic Times. To facilitate this transaction, the company has enlisted the expertise of Bank of America (BofA). This strategic move marks a significant moment for RIL, as it looks to liquidate a long-standing investment that has been held for 17 years.
RIL’s Investment History
RIL’s stake in Asian Paints was acquired back in 2008 for approximately ₹500 crore. Over the years, this investment has seen its ups and downs, but with the current market trends suggesting increased margin pressure and stiff competition, the timing appears ripe for RIL to cash out. In fact, this isn’t the first time RIL has contemplated selling its stake; back in 2020, discussions were initiated with banks regarding a potential sale.
Recent Performance of Asian Paints
In recent market activity, Asian Paints shares dipped by 1.62%, trading at ₹2,287.50 as of 11:50 AM today. The company recently disclosed its fiscal fourth quarter earnings, revealing a striking 45% year-on-year decline in net profit, which fell to ₹692 crore. This downturn is primarily attributed to an exceptional item of ₹182.96 crore in its consolidated financials for Q4 FY25.
- The exceptional item includes:
- A ₹83.7 crore loss from divesting its Indonesian subsidiaries.
- Impairment losses totaling ₹99.3 crore related to goodwill and intangibles from acquisitions, specifically Obgenix Software (White Teak) and Causeway Paints (Sri Lanka).
Industry Outlook
Amit Syngle, the Managing Director & CEO of Asian Paints, commented on the ongoing challenges: “The weak demand conditions prevalent for the past few quarters continued to affect the paint industry even in the last quarter of the financial year.” This statement underscores the broader challenges that the industry is currently facing, making RIL’s decision to sell its stake even more pertinent.
As Reliance Industries looks to exit this investment, the market will be watching closely to see how this transaction unfolds and what it means for both companies moving forward.
