Bharti Airtel Secures 400 MHz Spectrum in 26 GHz Band from Adani Group: A Game-Changer in Telecom

In a significant move for the telecommunications landscape in India, Bharti Airtel, the nation’s second-largest telecom operator, announced on April 22 that it has finalized agreements with Adani Data Networks Limited (ADNL). This deal, which includes its subsidiary Bharti Hexacom Limited, grants Airtel the rights to utilize 400 MHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz band. This acquisition is set to bolster Airtel’s capabilities across several vital regions, including Gujarat, Mumbai, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Strategic Acquisition of Spectrum

The spectrum obtained by Airtel comprises:

  • Gujarat: 100 MHz
  • Mumbai: 100 MHz
  • Andhra Pradesh: 50 MHz
  • Rajasthan: 50 MHz
  • Karnataka: 50 MHz
  • Tamil Nadu: 50 MHz

This strategic acquisition positions Bharti Airtel to enhance its service offerings and expand network capacity in these key markets. The 26 GHz band is a crucial component of the millimeter-wave spectrum, essential for delivering high-speed data services, particularly as the demand for 5G technology continues to surge.

Background on Adani Data Networks

Adani Data Networks, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, initially obtained these spectrum rights during India’s inaugural 5G spectrum auction that concluded on August 1, 2022. The company intended to utilize these airwaves for various applications, including data centers and a super app that supports diverse business operations, from electricity distribution to airport management.

Challenges in 5G Rollout

Despite its acquisition of the spectrum, Adani Data Networks has faced challenges in launching its 5G telecom services. Reports indicate that the government has issued several notices to the company for failing to meet the minimum rollout obligations (MRO) required for 5G. According to the auction regulations, telecom operators are mandated to initiate commercial services within one year of acquiring spectrum rights.
